As the economy continues to shift, so does the goals of consumers. Are we more cautious in making new purchases or remodeling endeavors; and how does that affect our spending habits?
“Kitchen upgrades still appear to be a top priority for homeowners”, says Kristen Ursomarso. “While the economy is improving, the customers are still feeling the impact of the recession,”
Finding and spending the time and money to complete home remodeling projects may be difficult; our customers are finding a way to do both. We find the reasons why homeowners are remodeling remain the same, they take a more planned approach and projects are on a smaller scale.
They are spending their money on items used in their daily lives and are making strategic updates..
The outlook for bathroom and kitchen projects are very positive, many of our customers are remodeling within the next six months. Projects topping that list include painting, installing a new countertop and adding new lighting. Homeowners are also looking for trusted brands that will increase their projects’ impact on their homes, with long-lasting value and durability.
Outdoor Lighting remains a strong category for fall. Customers want to make use of their outdoor living spaces well into October. Creating a living space for fireplaces & firepits is always a popular update project this time of year.
Outdoor fireplaces and firepits bring the warmth and ambiance of your living room to your backyard for fall.
It can be surrounded with brick, stucco, stone, or concrete to complement the architectural style of your home and can use wood, natural gas, or propane for fuel.
Another way to extend the season is with a gazebo. Gazebos create a beautiful focal point in your backyard and provide an inviting place to relax with your coffee on a crisp autumn morning or host a tailgate party with your closest friends. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, including wood, vinyl, and metal. Though gazebos are traditionally open-sided structures, newer models allow for removable vinyl or plexiglass windows that extend their use in cooler weather by offering protection from chilly winds. Window options range from simple roll-down vinyl panels that are fastened to the gazebo’s wall posts with Velcro to track-style vinyl or plexiglass window panels in an aluminum frame that mount to the wall sections of the gazebo.
As the days get shorter, proper lighting will keep you and your guests out of the dark on lovely fall evenings. Place path lights along walkways, driveways, and other small areas of your backyard to provide an illuminated route to your patio or deck. Add both beauty and function by lighting up the perimeter of you deck with lantern-style solar LED post lights. If you have a covered patio or gazebo, try hanging a wrought-iron chandelier or string lights for sparkle and ambiance.
Outdoor lighting enhances the beauty of your property, makes your home safer and more secure, and increases the number of pleasurable hours you spend outdoors. And it is an investment that pays off handsomely in the value it adds to your home.
For added security, illuminate any side of the house that would otherwise be in shadow. To conserve energy, install a motion or heat-sensitive control that will switch on the light only if someone approaches that side of the house. An automatic timer can control a portion of your outdoor lights to turn off at a certain hour, while basic security lights can be left on through the night. Another proven safety measure is to use timers on interior lights to make your home look occupied when you’re away.
Dark-Sky Friendly Lighting Tip
In order to prevent unwanted glare from your outdoor lighting, use bulbs with reasonable illumination levels. You may also use full cut-off fixtures to direct the light down towards the ground, where it is needed, rather than being cast to the side or up towards the sky, where it is wasted.

Hot Trends in Backyard Landscaping
JUNE 7, 2012 BY KRISTEN URSOMARSO
Now is the best time of year to be outside enjoying our outdoor living areas. While “new” landscape design products are exciting to reveal, there are a few backyard products we all know and love that are blossoming this year.
One of the best examples is the outdoor firepit. What family wouldn’t love to gather around a warm, inviting fire? Today there is a bouquet of longer-lasting firepits from traditional to contemporary and everything in between.
Classic Wood-Burning Firepits
Homeowners who prefer the beauty of a true wood-burning firepit now can choose rounded, square, rectangular, ground-hugging or bar height. Some are works of art, crafted from clay and stone, in a variety of colors that will make selecting a landscaping focal point easy. Many have large ledges that act as a table. Paving stone manufacturers, such as EP Henry, have caught onto this trend and now offer easy-to-build firepit packages with the right number of bricks along with the pan, screen and poker.
Clean-Burning Gas Firepits
The newest generation of gas firepits is incredibly convenient. Best of all, you avoid the hassle of finding dry wood, starter gel and a match to fire up your evening and the nuisance of smoke wafting in your direction. My favorite is a sleek, rectangle style, modeled after those cool linear direct-vent fireplaces for indoor use. It’s got a dark, charcoal grey base and stainless steel rectangular top. The fire line is cool, straight and narrow and has clear glass beads under the dancing flames. In a more traditionally designed space, try a square or oval gas firepit with a round or square fire line. Choose a softer base, with either stucco or stacked stone. If you want to add some pow to your firepit, change the color of the beads. The most popular, next to clear, is amber, but there are 18 colors to choose from.
Water is also finding new form this season. Waterfalls are more beautiful than ever with added color for night-time entertainment! Using LED lights and an ingenious remote control, you can pre-set your waterfall to illuminate colors throughout the evening – even red, white and blue for the Fourth of July. If you want turquoise to match your patio cushions, turn the dial on the remote and you’ll get a rainbow of blues. It’s really fun.
Low-Voltage Lighting Now Lasts Longer
Low-voltage landscape lighting is also sprouting new varieties. Manufacturers, such as Cast Landscape Lighting, are adding handsome LED lamps to their product lines faster than a slug can eat your favorite flower. Take advantage of the lighter load on your transformer and reduced maintenance. How does changing bulbs every five years sound, as compared to every year? If you are not ready to make that big of a change, try buying landscape lights with adjustable hubs. They lower the sockets so you can actually get your fingers in to change the bulb. Ah, spring blooms eternal.
