Clean it up
Bite the bullet and give your outdoor space a good scrub. Empty out the dead plants into your compost pile, put away the snow shovel and wipe down the furniture.

If you have an awning or an umbrella, first brush off any loose dirt and hose it down. Prepare a cleaning solution of water and mild soap such as Woolite or Dawn dishwashing liquid and use a soft bristle brush to clean the fabric. Let the cleaning solution sink into the fabric, thoroughly rinse and air dry. You’ll be surprised at how much impact a simple spring clean can have on your outdoor space.

Care: Outdoor fabric is meant to be left outside, but it isn’t maintenance-free. Try to keep cushions, umbrellas, and pillows out of direct downpours, and they’ll have a longer life span. If items get soaked, lean them upright against a wall, and allow all the moisture to drain out. To spot clean, dip a rag in a solution of two parts bleach and one part water, and then wipe items clean. Mold and mildew stick to dirt, so shake out cushions often to get rid of dust, pollen, and dirt. If absolutely necessary, machine-wash cushion and pillow covers in cold water, and line dry.

Never put acrylic fabric in a dryer; it will melt.

Angerstein’s is Delaware’s leading distributor of E. P. Henry™ Hardscaping™ products. E. P. Henry is the oldest family-owned and -operated manufacturer of unit concrete products in America and has long been committed to being the market leader in both consumer and commercial Hardscaping.

BBC TAVERN AND GRILL: Owner of BBC & Grill, Dave Dietze, really wanted to use local suppliers and artists in the creation of his beloved restaurant. The ambient lighting in the space, sconces and chandeliers, was specifed by Dietze’s architect, and supplied by Angerstein’s Lighting. When it came to lighting the beautifully crafted bar, Angerstein’s used low-voltage cabinet lighting that provides generous light to show off their display of sprits. This type of lighting also easliy hides the wires and hardware from sight. Then, in the restrooms, Angerstein’s softened the hard lines with beautiful mirrors from Uttermost and World Imports.

“Restaurant lighting design plays a critical role in attracting customers and effects their overall dining experience. More than 80 percent of restaurant success stories get written before the doors ever open. Kristen and Sandy worked with us to choose lighting, mirrors, and  bathroom accessories for BBC Tavern & Grill. Congratulations on celebrating 90 years in business. Quite an accomplishment!

Shortly thereafter, his son, Albert H. Angerstein, Jr. joined the company and helped run the business. The company proved to be successful, so the owners forged ahead, adding some hardware and building materials as well as heating oil to their product offerings.

In 1963, Bruce W. Greene, Mr. Angerstein’s son-in-law, joined the family business. Under Mr. Greene’s direction, the company defined its niche by servicing contractors and homebuilders. As the company grew, it branched into the fast-growing markets of windows, doors, mirrors, kitchens, baths and lighting, servicing DIY-ers and homeowners as well as contractors.

In 1995, Angerstein’s expanded their product offerings in their hardware store, enabling the company to accommodate many more “Do-It-Yourself” customers.

After making deliveries for years to the Delaware beach resorts and surrounding areas, Angerstein’s opened a store in Sussex County, Delaware in 2006. Located in the historic town of Milton, this store gives customers in the lower part of the state access to Angerstein’s excellent products and services. Primarily a hardscaping and building supply store, Angerstein’s South – as we fondly refer to it – is an excellent addition to the family. And speaking of family, today, every single member of the Greene family is active in the operations of the company, and Angerstein’s has become the premier Building Supply & Design Center in the state of Delaware and surrounding areas.

Safety Tips for the Holidays

0

Will you soon don the parka and embark on the annual quest for the perfect Charlie Brown holiday tree? Or simply descend the stairs and fetch the ever-symmetrical artificial tree from the basement?

Either way, be smart about fire safety, especially if you have a fireplace or freestanding stove. They belong together during the holidays – but not too close! Although indoor tree fires aren’t common, when they do occur, they’re more likely to be serious. That’s according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Keep everyone in your home safe by following these simply safety tips:

Placement: When choosing a spot for your tree, make sure there is a good amount of space between it and your fireplace or freestanding stove. It really doesn’t matter if your unit burns wood, pellets or gas – it makes fire, so keep the tree a safe distance away.

Fire Resistance: When purchasing an artificial tree, make sure it is rated fire resistant. All trees will burn if exposed to flames, but trees that are manufactured in this manner will resist fire and extinguish faster than those that are not.

H2O: If you have a live tree, water it every day. The heat in our homes dries trees out fast, and they can easily become fire hazards. By keeping the water reservoir full at all times, you know you’re doing everything possible to keep your tree hydrated.

Waste – Not! Don’t ever burn wrapping paper or cardboard boxes in your fireplace or stove. They can easily escalate out of control and cause a flash fire.

For more information about preventing holiday tree fires, visit the U.S. Fire Administration’s website.

Hues of blue fuse with green tones, morphing into one of the most sought-after colors of the season: Teal. Pantone notes that the shades of green so popular earlier this year are evolving into these deeper, luxurious shades of teal, embracing a soft, versatile look for Fall.

A sophisticated and refined addition to any room, teal embodies elements of simplicity and discriminating taste. At the same time, teal offers a vibrant pop of color that can enhance an otherwise lackluster neutral-based space.

Tricks of the Trade from Murray Feiss Designers

0

A great lighting strategy can do so much more than create a safe, inviting atmosphere in your home. With the right lighting scheme, you can dramatically enhance your home’s aesthetics (and value) by accentuating its best features, and de-emphasizing “problem areas.” Here, the world renowned lighting designers from Murray Feiss offer their exclusive tips and tricks!

Murray Feiss

Creative Ceiling Solutions

  • To make low ceilings seem higher, bounce light from up-lighting fixtures (like torchiere-style wall sconces) to visually “raise” ceilings.
  • To highlight dramatic Cathedral or beamed ceilings: Use wall sconces to cast uplight, emphasizing beamed ceilings.
  • To disguise rough or patchy surfaces, keep lighting off of the ceiling by using only downlighting. Imperfections in a surface will be less noticeable without direct light shining on them. Beautiful, decorative fixtures (such as chandeliers) can also serve as alternate focal points.

Accent Lighting Tips

  • Highlight textured surfaces for a fascinating look. Whether it’s a tile
  • backsplash or a stone fireplace, textured surfaces should be brought to life with the proper accent lighting. For the best results, “skim” the surfaces with a slightly-angled light.
  • Consider backlighting decorative objects. Placing a simple light behind decorative fixtures, like plants or sculptures, creates a fascinating accent lighting effect. This works particularly well with accent pieces that have translucent components, like glass or even the water in fountains.
